Wisdom teeth usually need removing when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed or pushing other teeth. Surgical extraction may be necessary when a tooth is broken at gum level or a root remains. Bone grafting is considered where the jaw has lost volume and an implant needs more support. Certain medications and medical conditions affect surgery and healing, so we always review your medical history first.
How the treatment works
The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic. For an impacted tooth, a small incision gives access, the tooth is removed — sometimes in sections, which is gentler on the surrounding bone — and the site is cleaned and stitched. Straightforward cases take twenty to forty minutes; more complex ones longer. We explain each step as we go, and you receive written aftercare instructions before you leave.
Aftercare and durability
Expect some swelling and discomfort for two to three days, easing steadily after that. Apply cold packs on the first day, stick to soft food, avoid smoking and do not rinse vigorously for the first twenty-four hours. If stitches are not dissolvable, they come out after about a week — we will arrange this before you fly home or advise your dentist locally.

We normally advise staying two to three days after a surgical extraction so we can check the site before you fly. Flying itself is not a problem once initial healing is under way, and we will give you a clear timeline in your plan.
Will I be awake during the procedure?
Yes — these procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic, so you are awake but the area is completely numb. You will feel pressure and movement but not pain. If you are anxious, tell us; we take extra time and talk you through each step.
